"It is the first in a planned series of seven volumes, all of which will be devoted to one or two old masters, beginning in the Middle Ages and ending in the twenty-first century with myself with the note that both the word "old" and the word "master" will have changed meanings.
My inspiration was Verwey Museum Haarlem; a small museum with a limited collection whose Droste cocoa can in particular caught my attention.
The woman holding in her hands a can with on it again the same woman who... etc.
This regression can also be reversed.
Old Masters I is devoted primarily to Guillaume de Machaut and concludes with an anonymous conductus from the eleventh or twelfth century.
The orchestra is divided into four groups. Groups 2 and 3 play alternating, and later overlapping, 3-voice excerpts from de Machaut cut from each other. Groups 1 and 4 play short rhythmic cues that always introduce a new section.
To play the anonymous conductus, the four groups are joined two by two.
Throughout the piece, the so-called hoketus technique is used, which consists of splitting each melody into short motifs, or even detached notes, played alternately by different instrumentalists each time.
This technique was frequently used by Machaut and makes the performance risky, but in the favorable case also spectacular."- Klaas de Vries
