"Saint Anna was one of the best known and most beloved saints in the 15th century. As the grandmother of Jesus, she was considered to have special power as a heavenly mediatrix for her grandson. Her cult took on grandiose proportions, especially in the Rijnland and the Netherlands.... Paintings and sculptures depicted St. Anne with her child Mary and her grandchild Jesus.

In the 15th century, Anna appeared as a standing adult woman with Mary, a little girl, on her arm and Jesus, a baby, on her lap, or sitting with Mary on her lap, with Mary also carrying Jesus on her lap.

Anna in Three is also called the " earthly Trinity " (in Latin Trinitas Terrestris), as opposed to the " divine Trinity " (Trinitas Caelestis).

In my new work for Orchestra de Ereprijs ("Distant Trinity"), I have split the ensemble into three groups (each group symbolizes either Jesus, Mary or Anna). The three groups play recognizable, repeated fragments from previous works dealing with ritual, or Christmas. Everything happens in the background, as if each gesture is a memory from another time."- Vanessa Lann
